Britomart Car Park Canopy

A functional shade structure designed to shade cars, but more importantly to visually complete the roof top level of the Britomart Car Parking Building.

Project Details

Client: Cooper & Company
Fabric Type: Mesh
Function: Architectual
Scope of Work: Concept, Design & Build
Location: Quay Street, Britomart, Auckland, NZ
Size: 2,560sqm
Completion: 12th January 2011

The shade structure comprises a serries of low pitch barrel vault canopies, providing cover for 197 car spaces. A standard canopy module was developed, which was then varied to suit a one, two or three car park span or formed as a back to back double bay.

One of the design challenges was to maximise the head room under the canopy while limited to a maximum site covenant height of 2.2m above floor level, as well as achieving sufficient fabric shape to prevent undue fabric movement.
