The brief was to create a 2,300sqm iconic touring event venue for Louis Vuitton’s 150th Anniversary. They didn’t want a tent, but a perfectly smooth white box with no obvious projections, onto which lighting technicians could project the company’s distinctive motif imagery.
The result was a trussed venue structure in the shape of Louis Vuitton’s original travelling trunk and finished in blank white PVC to take the PGI projections that transformed the structure into a “magical” venue.
This huge structure and all its accompanying technical accessories had to pack into fewer than eighteen, 40 foot containers, travel with minimal rigging crew and be ready within 12 weeks for the first one night only show. Then it would travel on, anticipating weather extremes from winter’s snow to tropical storms, for further shows in Hong Kong, Tokyo, London and Paris. At the time of design, sites had not yet been established for the venue. Therefore ballasting was incorporated to negate physically anchoring the structure to unknown surfaces.
Fabric Shelter Systems developed fabric-tensioning devices to satisfy all expectations. We safely and efficiently installed a serious structure in nine days on unprepared sites. The project required that we also work closely with the interior designer. Our expertise was called upon for design development, fabrication and rigging of all the interior ceiling and walls.
The outcome for Louis Vuitton’s Art of Travel has gone down in history as one of the most spectacular and successful travelling extravaganzas ever, proving to the world that Fabric Shelter Systems, can definitely claim to be one of the world’s leading creative fabric design developers and fabrication companies.
The structure also won Fabric Shelter Systems a prestigious International Achievement Award from the Industrial Fabrics Association International. The award recognizes innovative ideas, the ability to meet client’s needs and efforts to overcome project challenges and was judged by a diverse panel of industry experts, editors, architects, educators and design professionals.
The structure is now permanently located in New Zealand and in use as a film studio.
