Manuwera Train Station

The directive from the client was to provide shelter for the commuters from the local area and the nearby shopping centre and bus station. There is a large bridge across the train tracks which previously left travellers exposed, now the bridge and all the stairs down to the tracks are covered.

The design challenge was to have a visual organic relationship between the large structural span of the bridge and the relatively narrow spans of the ramps and connector canopies. To introduce a sophisticated element and additional translucency on the large bridge Canopy a translucent fabric was used.

The construction challenge was to utilise the train schedules to plan the installation around the quiet times (through the night). The large bridge canopy was fabricated in 3 pieces to provide for an efficient and safe install.

The client was very happy with the end result. The canopies are providing the shade and shelter the commuters required and the have given the train station its own unique look. The canopies have been well received in the local area and have made the pedestrian flows more efficient.

Up lighting was installed to utilise the translucent qualities of the fabric membrane. This contributes to safety and fulfils a sign post function as the bridge over the rail corridor and ramps toward the rail platforms exceed a total length of 250 metres.

The brief was to design and build adjoining Canopies to provide shelter for commuters and enhance the local area. To introduce a sophisticated element and additional translucency over the bridge Canopy Serge Ferrari FX901 was used. Up lighting was installed to utilise the translucent qualities of the fabric membrane at night. The design of the Canopies has given the train station its own unique look and the Project has been well received by locals.
