The Diablo Valley College Art Complex, located on the Pleasant Hill campus, serves as a vibrant hub, bringing together the college’s various art programs under one roof. The new facility was designed not only to meet the functional needs of art students and faculty but also to reflect the creativity and innovation inherent to the arts. To achieve this, the architects envisioned a striking exterior facade that would make a bold statement while harmonizing with the campus environment.

The original design featured a decorative fin system crafted from metal, meant to create a dynamic and visually engaging aesthetic for the first floor. However, budget constraints made the metal design impractical. To overcome this challenge, we collaborated with the architects to develop an alternative solution that preserved the artistic vision while staying within budget.

This value-engineered solution involved the use of an extruded aluminum frame, which was then skinned on both sides with a Type 1B PES waterproof membrane. The result was a lightweight yet durable decorative facade that mimicked the appearance of the original metal design but at a fraction of the cost. The membrane’s waterproof properties also ensured longevity, making it a practical choice for exterior applications.

This innovation transformed the building’s facade into a unique architectural element that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also resonates with the artistic spirit of the college. The new Art Complex now stands as a symbol of creativity, collaboration, and adaptability—values that are central to both the arts and the educational mission of Diablo Valley College. By incorporating a flexible and cost-effective solution, the project successfully marries form and function, creating a lasting impact on the campus and the art community it serves.
