BUILD
This monumental kinetic sculpture, *Wings Over Water*, is inspired by the theme of migration, which resonates with the architectural re-design of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. The artwork symbolises the connection between human and avian migration, reflecting the diversity of Houston’s population and its role as a destination for those seeking a better future.
Standing at an impressive 9 metres tall, *Wings Over Water* integrates seamlessly with the surrounding 7.3-metre by 18.9-metre outdoor fountain at the front of the convention centre. The kinetic sculpture is designed with a hydraulic drive shaft and armature that animate two massive wings crafted from translucent, coated PES mesh. These wings beat gracefully, casting ever-changing shadows on the surrounding space as they move, enhancing the dynamic interplay between the sculpture and its environment.
Fabric Structures, partnered with Structurflex, was responsible for engineering and fabricating the wings to meet the precise specifications of the commissioned artist. The design process and execution required careful coordination to ensure the wings moved smoothly while maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic beauty. The translucent quality of the wings creates a constantly shifting visual experience, making Wings Over Water not just a static installation but a living, breathing piece of art.
