BUILD
Located in East Tamaki, GMP Dairy was looking for a weather protection solution that could be integrated within its existing purpose-built manufacturing plant. At the time, truck unloading was carried out along a narrow strip of concrete, bordered by tall buildings on both sides. While this arrangement worked well in moderate conditions, exposure to rain, wind and intense sun was creating challenges for day-to-day operations.
FS developed a custom canopy solution, incorporating PVC walls along one side to provide additional weather protection. The design needed to work within the irregular geometry of the existing space, connecting directly to the traditional building edge on the opposite side, where no PVC wall was required. Rather than following a conventional straight footprint, the canopy incorporated an angled change in direction through its centre to follow the site boundaries. This allowed FS to maximise weather coverage while maintaining an open, functional passage for forklifts, trucks and other vehicles to move through freely.
As the canopy formed part of a wider programme of upgrades at GMP Dairy, close coordination with the civil team was important to ensure the works were integrated with the surrounding improvements. Through this collaboration, the canopy was delivered smoothly alongside the other site works, leaving GMP Dairy with a practical, well-integrated facility that provides improved weather protection without compromising the functionality or appearance of the space.
