The Matakana School canopy project was conceived to enhance the school’s outdoor space, providing a versatile, sheltered area that could be used year-round for various activities, including assemblies, sports, and general play. Our design team worked closely with the school administration to develop a solution that would seamlessly integrate with the existing architecture while providing ample protection from New Zealand’s unpredictable weather.
The chosen design spans approximately 13.3 meters by 14.2 meters, covering a total of 177 square meters. The canopy’s structure features Serge Ferrari 902S2, a high-performance tensile fabric known for its exceptional durability, UV resistance, and ability to withstand strong winds and heavy rain. This material was specifically selected to ensure the canopy would provide long-lasting protection and require minimal maintenance.
Our fabrication process took place at our state-of-the-art facility in Whangarei, where the fabric panels were meticulously crafted to meet the highest standards of quality and precision. The steel columns were equipped with custom-fabricated PVC protective boots, designed not only to safeguard the structural elements from wear and tear but also to create a softer surface, reducing the risk of injury to the young students who use the space.
The installation phase was carried out with careful attention to detail, ensuring that the canopy was securely anchored and perfectly aligned with the existing school hall. The curved front member of the canopy, a standout feature of the design, was expertly shaped and installed to enhance both the functionality and visual appeal of the structure.
Fabric Structures is thrilled to have contributed to the improvement of Matakana School’s facilities, providing a safe and versatile space that will serve the school community for years to come.
