The kea, renowned as the world’s only alpine parrot, holds a special place in the hearts of New Zealanders for its cheeky and inquisitive nature. According to Auckland Zoo, this highly intelligent and social bird learns from its parents and its own experiences, making it a fascinating subject for observation. Known for their playful behaviour and mischievous tendencies, kea are notorious for dismantling objects that catch their interest, from cars to motorbikes.
To ensure the safety of both the kea and their surroundings, Fabric Structures proudly contributed to the design, fabrication, and installation of the robust mesh that forms the foundation of their enclosure. This heavy-duty mesh not only keeps the kea contained but also allows them the freedom to engage in their natural behaviours.
The Kea Enclosure forms part of Whenua Waotū/The High Country at Auckland Zoo, which immerses visitors in the wild beauty of New Zealand’s alpine environment. In addition to housing kea, the habitat’s streams are home to the rare and iconic whio (blue duck). As part of Te Wao Nui, which spans one-fifth of Auckland Zoo, the enclosure is situated within an area that showcases over 100 native plant species and around 60 animal species from across Aotearoa. From rugged highlands to dense nocturnal forests, Te Wao Nui offers an unforgettable journey through New Zealand’s diverse natural landscapes.
