As part of Auckland Zoo's ambitious 10-year redevelopment project, Te Wao Nui was created to showcase New Zealand’s diverse ecosystems and unique wildlife. Within this expansive exhibit lies Moutere Rāhui - The Islands, which provides a sanctuary for a number of our smaller native creatures, including the Antipodes Island Parakeet. This remarkable habitat replicates the bird's natural environment, celebrating its importance as part of Aotearoa's biodiversity.

Fabric Structures played a pivotal role in this project, contributing to the architectural design, fabrication, and installation of the enclosure's specialised mesh and PVC components. The enclosure's robust design ensures the safety of its inhabitants while creating a visually immersive experience for visitors. The bespoke mesh not only secures the parakeets but also allows ample natural light and ventilation, ensuring the birds thrive in their environment.

The Te Wao Nui project, spanning a fifth of the zoo, represents Auckland Zoo’s commitment to conserving native species and educating the public about the rich biodiversity of Aotearoa. Moutere Rāhui highlights the fragile beauty of New Zealand’s island habitats, offering an opportunity for visitors to connect with one of the country’s rarest parrot species.
