BUILD
The Canterbury Cricket Trust entrusted us with the detailed design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of this stylised fabric roof structure, incorporating both structural steelwork and high-performance fabric membranes. Covering a total area of 1,750 square meters across the five conical bays, the pavilion also includes an additional 420 square meters of fabric for the internal two-bay liner. The centerpiece of the structure, a 15.2-meter-high main mast column, supports the iconic conical fabric canopy that rises majestically over the venue.
The structure features a stunning five-bay floating canopy, supported by a network of columns, gutter arm beams, and tension cables, creating a visually striking and functional roof. An internal two-bay liner adds to the architectural beauty, providing a ceiling for the main function space, ensuring both form and function are perfectly balanced.
This project is a cornerstone in Christchurch's post-earthquake recovery, contributing not only to the city’s resilience but also to its rich cricketing history. The redevelopment of Hagley Oval has placed Canterbury and New Zealand in the global spotlight, hosting world-class events like the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup and receiving international recognition through media features such as the critically acclaimed "Resume Play" documentary.
The pavilion itself is a masterful blend of aesthetics, functionality, and environmental sustainability. Designed to meet the exacting standards of the International Cricket Council (ICC), it offers a generous hosting capacity with flexible spaces to accommodate a variety of events. The pavilion’s lower level, built into the grassy embankment, provides essential supporting spaces, all while blending seamlessly into the natural landscape.
This architectural feat was realized through extensive collaboration between architectural, structural, and tension membrane design consultants. The result is an innovative, seismically resilient structure that respects the environmental and historical significance of Hagley Park, ensuring its place as a landmark for generations to come. The Hagley Cricket Pavilion is not only a functional sports venue but also a symbol of Christchurch’s rebirth and resilience on the global stage.
