BUILD

Westlake Girls High School, known for its excellence in academics and athletics, aimed to enhance their students' sporting experience by installing a 3500m² all-weather canopy over their netball and tennis courts. The vision for the canopy was ambitious: it had to allow natural light to flood the courts while providing necessary shade for players. Beyond aesthetics, it was vital to minimize disruption to the school’s academic calendar and maintain student safety throughout construction. The project faced several challenges, including difficult ground conditions and adverse weather.

Fabric Structures in partnership with Structurflex was entrusted with bringing this vision to life, handling the structural engineering, supply, fabrication, and installation of all components. In collaboration with Creative Spaces architects, Fabric Structures developed fabric connection details that met the architect’s desire for a light-filled space, while ensuring the structure was completely weathertight. Achieving the balance between ample light and comfortable shading on the courts was a central challenge. This was addressed by combining two high-performance materials: Serge Ferrari 1002 T2 coated PES membrane and a specialty ETFE foil. These materials allowed natural daylight to permeate the courts, creating an optimal environment without harsh direct sunlight, while the contrast in translucency created a soft, shaded atmosphere.

The project also required the design and manufacture of a custom guttering system to ensure proper drainage, an essential aspect for long-term durability. Beyond the structural and aesthetic challenges, ground conditions proved difficult during the foundation phase. Working with ASPEC Construction, Fabric Structures used innovative engineering solutions to address these challenges, ensuring the project timeline remained intact. Despite the unforeseen difficulties, the project moved forward without compromising safety or schedule.

Precision and control were essential to the successful implementation of the project. Given that the construction took place within a functioning school environment, careful planning was required to ensure minimal disruption and maximum safety for students and staff. The team worked efficiently to meet the short construction window, delivering a quality solution that aligned waith the school’s operational needs.

The final result is an exceptional sporting venue that has garnered praise from students, staff, and the local community alike. The courts, now usable day and night in all weather conditions, have significantly increased opportunities for physical activity and community engagement. The project has helped the school reinforce its focus on personal achievement, providing a long-term investment in both the academic and athletic growth of its students.

Fabric Structures' innovative design and engineering solutions have transformed the school’s sports facilities, offering students the best environment to excel in all conditions. The canopy stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing excellence and fostering well-being for future generations.
