BUILD
For Jean Batten School, the task was to design and construct an all-weather canopy over an existing hard-court, extending the school's usable outdoor space. The project also involved expanding the concrete apron slab, and time constraints were tight, with the work needing to be prioritized during school holidays to minimize disruption.
Fabric Structures proposed a barrel vault-style architectural canopy made from Flexlight 902 fabric. The design used tension extrusion to achieve the desired tension and aesthetics, creating a seamless integration with the existing court. Despite initial challenges, such as the absence of a pre-attained geotechnical report, the project moved forward smoothly. Both the school and Fabric Structures were pleased with the final outcome—a durable, functional, and visually appealing canopy that has since become a valuable asset to Jean Batten School.
The 761.3-square-meter canopy not only enhances the school’s outdoor facilities but also provides a versatile space for students, offering protection from the elements and allowing activities to continue throughout the year.
