BUILD

Fabric Structures was commissioned to design, engineer, fabricate, and install a tensile architectural canopy for the John Street Bridge, spanning the Hātea River in Whangārei. This project marked a significant milestone for our team, as it was one of the first of its kind completed in our hometown of Whangārei, following years of work largely focused in Auckland and international locations.

The canopy design is deeply influenced by the surrounding maritime environment, echoing the coastal and nautical aesthetics of Whangārei. Special lighting was integrated into the canopy, enabling the structure to be themed for major events, such as the Rugby World Cup, where the city celebrated by "Painting the Town Red."

Beyond its striking visual appeal, the canopy and associated upgrades to the bridge paved the way for John Street to become a versatile and weatherproof public space. This transformation has allowed the area to host numerous community events such as the Artisans Fair, food markets, and buskers' festivals, enriching the city's cultural and social activities for both locals and visitors.

The John Street Bridge canopy was recognised for its design and construction excellence, receiving a "Highly Commended" award in the annual LSAA Design Awards, highlighting its innovative contribution to the region’s urban landscape.
