BUILD

As part of the development of One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch, we were engaged to design, fabricate, and install two large-scale welcome signs that contribute to the venue’s identity and enhance the arrival experience for visitors. Positioned prominently on the exterior of the stadium, the signs provide a bold visual statement while complementing the architecture of one of New Zealand’s most significant new public venues.

One New Zealand Stadium has been designed as a world-class, multi-purpose facility capable of hosting major sporting events, concerts, exhibitions, and community gatherings. With a capacity of 30,000 spectators and a strong focus on creating memorable visitor experiences, every element of the venue has been carefully considered, including the way guests are welcomed upon arrival.

The project involved the delivery of two identical signs, each measuring 18.7 metres long by 6.8 metres high. Constructed using Serge Ferrari Soltis 92 mesh in Tennis Green, the signage was designed to achieve a striking visual presence while maintaining a lightweight and durable solution suitable for the exposed external environment.

A key challenge of the project was developing a bespoke support framework capable of integrating with the stadium’s angled structural steelwork. The framing system was required to accommodate pre-designed letter structures, with each letter frame bolting into dedicated sleeves within the sign framework. Careful consideration was given to mounting geometry, viewing angles, and structural integration to ensure the finished installation delivered optimal visibility, readability, and architectural balance from multiple approaches to the stadium.

From concept development through to fabrication and installation, close attention was paid to achieving a seamless integration between the signage and the wider stadium structure. The use of architectural mesh provided a refined finish that complemented the stadium’s design language while offering excellent durability and long-term performance.

The completed welcome signs now form an important part of the stadium’s public identity, creating a strong sense of arrival for the thousands of visitors who pass through the venue each year. While relatively focused in scope compared to many large-scale stadium projects, the signage required a high level of coordination, precision, and design consideration to deliver a solution worthy of one of New Zealand’s premier sporting and entertainment destinations.
