BUILD
The Whakatāne Aquatic and Fitness Centre project was a comprehensive undertaking that required meticulous design, engineering, and fabrication to create a fully enclosed outdoor swimming pool complex. This project, commissioned by the Whakatāne City Council, involved the installation of a fabric roof, internal liner, and side curtains, all supported by structural steelwork. The end result is a striking barrel-vaulted structure, consisting of four bays seamlessly integrated to form a protective outer roof. This roof not only shelters the pool but also enhances the overall functionality of the complex, creating a space that is both visually impressive and thermally efficient.
The project utilized Serge Ferrari’s PVC 832 for the roof. This fabric was chosen for its high durability, weather resistance, and ability to withstand the elements, ensuring long-term protection for the pool below. Complementing the roof was the installation of a translucent internal liner, made from Serge Ferrari 402. This liner served a dual purpose: not only did it provide an extra layer for thermal heat retention, but it also acted as a barrier to protect the steelwork from the corrosive chemicals typically found in pool environments. The strategic inclusion of the liner was a critical component in ensuring the longevity and sustainability of the structure.
One of the most innovative aspects of the project was the custom-designed side curtains, crafted from Mehler's FR 700 fabric. These curtains were engineered to contribute to the overall thermal retention of the space, reducing power consumption and making the facility more energy efficient. In addition to conserving energy, the curtains extended the usability of the pool, allowing it to remain operational during colder months. By enclosing the pool with a system that efficiently retained heat, the design achieved a significant reduction in operational costs, a key priority for the client. The combination of the roof, liner, and curtains created an optimal environment that balances functionality with sustainability.
The Whakatāne Aquatic and Fitness Centre project was completed in May 2021. Spanning 18.5 meters by 40 meters, the structure transforms the outdoor pool into a year-round facility, offering a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for swimmers regardless of the weather. The Whakatāne Aquatic and Fitness Centre is now not just a functional space, but a symbol of forward-thinking design, enhancing the city's recreational offerings while minimizing its environmental impact.
The pool complex is now a thriving community hub, attracting visitors and providing a space that promotes health, fitness, and enjoyment for all. The Whakatāne City Council's vision for a modern, energy-efficient facility has been fully realized, making this project a cornerstone of the town's ongoing development.
