BUILD

Our client embarked on an extensive waterfront renovation, seeking a modern roofing solution that would offer flexibility: shelter from the elements when needed, while still allowing for an open-air experience on fine days. The project presented challenges, as the area in question lacked both the structural integrity and elevation required to support a conventional roof system.

To address this, the team proposed either a freestanding structure or a retrofitted design. The chosen solution involved attaching a steel support beam to the existing structural roof timbers, raising the elevation and achieving the necessary pitch for optimal water drainage and wind resistance. A retractable roof system was selected for its versatility, offering the client the option to fully open or close the roof based on the weather conditions. This system has a proven track record in exposed environments, making it an ideal choice for the waterfront location.

To enhance the design further, a semi-translucent roofing material was selected, allowing natural light to filter into the southern-facing parts of the home when the roof was closed. The result was a seamless integration of modern roofing technology with the existing structure, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic appeal for the renovated waterfront space.
