The Ellerslie Train Station plays a vital role in Auckland's rail network, catering to thousands of commuters daily. Recognizing its importance, Fabric Structures was brought on to elevate the station’s functionality and aesthetic appeal by designing and installing a series of canopies. The project first began in 2009 with the installation of canopies for a pedestrian overbridge and continued in 2012 with the addition of canopies for a new overbridge and stairwell.

The design phase presented unique challenges due to the geometrically complex nature of the site. The canopies had to seamlessly integrate with sloping ramps and connect to existing structures, all while maintaining a sleek and modern look. To ensure precision and efficiency, Fabric Structures utilized advanced CAD and 3D modelling, allowing for an expedited design process that maximized both functionality and visual appeal.

The installation came with its own set of logistical and safety hurdles, as the team had to work alongside a bustling six-lane freeway and operational railway lines. Additionally, the intermittent closure of access roads required careful coordination with local authorities to minimize disruption. The installation was strategically planned to take place during off-peak travel periods, ensuring a swift and efficient construction process.

The result has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the client and the local community. The canopies not only provide essential shelter but also enhance the station’s architectural presence, blending modern design with practical functionality. The successful integration of the canopies into the station’s infrastructure stands as a testament to Fabric Structures’ ability to navigate complex projects while delivering exceptional results..
