Flying Saucer, a busy restaurant and bar in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, features a large outdoor dining courtyard that also serves as a concert venue during the warmer months. This space is defined by over 20 fully mature, protected trees, which add to the venue’s appeal but provide limited shade for patrons in the harsh Texas sun. Management recognized the need for a structure that could offer more comfort for customers while respecting the trees' needs for sunlight and growth.

The solution was an innovative ETFE canopy that allows the transmission of UV light, essential for tree health, while also providing the necessary shade for patrons. The ETFE film was designed with silver fritted dots to strike the perfect balance between shading and sunlight, creating a comfortable environment without affecting tree respiration. The canopy was carefully designed around the height and position of the tree canopy, which varies across the courtyard, ensuring the trees' protection was maintained.

In addition to its shading properties, the canopy includes a vent at the top, allowing warm air to escape and ensuring comfort for both trees and customers. The installation process was meticulously planned to avoid disrupting the restaurant's operations, with road closures secured for the use of specialized lifting equipment. The result is a stunning and functional shade structure that provides relief from the sun while preserving the trees' access to light. It enhances the outdoor dining experience, allowing patrons to enjoy the space year-round, while also contributing to the unique ambiance that makes Flying Saucer special.
