The vision for Waimauku School was to create an all-weather covered play area that would be suitable for year-round use and accommodate a variety of activities, including team sports, general exercise, and outdoor assemblies. This required a thoughtful design that took several factors into account to ensure functionality and durability.

Fabric Structures worked closely with the school to deliver a custom solution that met their needs. The final package included a specially designed gutter system and coordination of lighting, ensuring the space could be used effectively in all conditions. The structure itself was a barrel vault design, covering an area of 823.6 square meters, using Flexlight 902 fabric.

Since its completion in 2021, the covered outdoor learning area (COLA) has seen extensive use for both cultural and physical activities, becoming an essential and valued addition to the school. This multipurpose canopy has allowed students and staff to enjoy outdoor space regardless of the weather, enhancing the school’s environment and providing a versatile venue for a wide range of events.
